Homework
Infants
The main homework, which is set for Infants, is reading. They may be given additional homework once a week. Children bring their reading book home every day. Ten minutes reading each evening aids progress greatly. Children are expected to read aloud to an adult until they are considered to be independent, usually at about eight to nine years of age. Beyond this age, each child is expected to read for about twenty minutes each evening. A Reading Record Book is used by parents and teachers to note the child's progress. The Reading Record Book is kept in the Reading Folder.
Each week they will be given a list of words to learn for a test on the following Monday.
Juniors
In the Junior class, in addition to reading, pupils are set regular homework in English, Maths, occasionally in History and work related to the Topical Unit. All assignments are recorded in the Homework Diary which parents sign daily after ensuring that all homework has been completed. Children are given clear instructions about homework. The Homework Diary is kept in the Reading Folder. Homework should not take longer than approximately 30-40 minutes .We leave it to the parents' discretion if they wish their child to continue for longer if the work is not finished.
It is essential for the children's success in school that they receive parental support in their homework. It is the parents' responsibility to provide a suitable space and time in which their children can work at home. Ensuring that homework has been completed, talking with your child about their work and helping with extra practice at home, especially if the teacher has pointed out an area of need, is of great value.
